The music of Robby Grewal’s new film Aloo Chaat… has been composed on an assortment basis by Vipin Mishra, Xulfi, Mehfuz Maruf and RDB. The music comprises eight songs which include two remixes. The film is a comedy about a youngster from a traditional Punjabi family who brings back a wife from America.

The movie has Aftab Shivdasani and Aamna Shariff in the lead roles. Directed by Robby Grewal, who has earlier directed Samay, Mera Pehla Pehla Pyaar(MP3) and Yahaan, the movie will hit theatres on 20 March.

The title track, Aloo Chaat, has the makings of a song that will be understood only after its heard a couple of times. The vocals are rendered by Kailash Kher and the lyrics have been written and composed in Punjabi by Vipin Mishra. There is an almost rustic appeal to Kailash’s voice but it seems wasted in this mediocre song. The remix of the song doesn’t stand out in particular and ends up forgettable.

The next song Boliyaan, composed by RDB is sure to get you on your feet and transports you straight into the middle of a full-on Punjabi wedding celebration. Though a lot of people might not understand the Punjabi lyrics, there is a certain charm about this song, which added with Nindy Kaur’s vocals, adds to its authentic appeal.

The other version of Boliyaan has also been sung by Nindy Kaur and sounds like a typical melody that you would hear at marriage celebrations in the North. You cannot help but wonder why two versions of the same song that more or less sound similar would be added on the album. Therefore the presence of this song in the album seems pointless.

The next song Dhadke Jiya has been composed and sung by Xulfi who is part of the band Call from Pakistan. The romantic melody of the song is ideal for the video which portrays Aftab Shivdasani and Aamna Shariff romancing one another despite the watchful eye of Sanjay Mishra. Xulfi has rendered amazing vocals to this song and has managed to portray the earnest, soulful and sweet romance between the lead couple through this well composed track. The remix version is thankfully not overdone with exaggerated beats but remains true to the original.

Life is a sizzling Aloo Chaat is a track that leaves a lot to be desired. An alteration of the original, it sadly fails to get it right in terms of vocals, lyrics and tune. A jumble of meaningless words piled into a song that makes absolutely no sense in terms of melody and makes you wonder whether the song was added just for the sake of having an additional track on board.

Aloo Chaat by RDB is probably the most memorable of the three versions included in the album. It is no wonder that the song has already become a hit in clubs across the nation. Though the brothers semi-scream the vocals, they do so in a way that works to the song’s favour. The beat in the song coupled with a mix of unique vocals by Nindy Kaur and Punjabi rap grabs your attention and keeps you on your feet. A classic example of Hip Hop meets Punjab…, the title track has a video that features RDB, Nindy Kaur, Aftab Shivdasani and Aamna Shariff.

One feels that the songs lack the variety that a movie so uniquely named should have had. Though RDB’s version of the title track and Xulfi’s Dhadke Jiya are memorable, the album cannot be summed up on two tracks alone. Overall the music of Aloo Chaat was a disappointment and one that leaves its listeners with nothing much to digest.
