MUMBAI: Singer Udit Narayan, whose name had been nominated for the civilian honour Padmashri this year may find himself out of the list.
The official version now is that since Narayan was born in southern Nepal, he is ineligible for the honour bestowed by the Union Government of India on exemplary citizens.
Brushing aside the rumours, Narayan stresses that he was born in Baisi village in Bihar, a fact that is denied by the Biharis themselves. Narayan claims that he has been singing for 40 years and is an Indian.

Udit Narayan started playback singing in Bollywood in 1988 with the Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla starrer Qayamat se Qayamat tak. The song, â€?Papa kehte hai’ also won him the Filmfare best male playback singer award in the same year. His repertoire includes songs in Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Oriya, Telugu, Tamil, English and Malayalam. He was also the panelist for music reality show, Indian Idol and Waar Pariwaar on Sony Entertainment Television.
