MUMBAI: Based on the format of popularity reality show ‘Indian Idol’, Tihar Jail has organised a talent hunt for its inmates titled ‘Tihar Idol’. The auditions for the contest are scheduled to begin next week.
The competition is organised after a request by the production house RVP Directors. As part of a reformation programme, the hunt will be held for three months and will witness the selected candidates being groomed for the final round. The production house has joined hands with music company Music One, to set up a studio in the premises of jail number 3, arrange for judges and sound recording equipment.
The ‘Tihar Idol’ and other talented inmates selected at the end of the hunt will get a chance to record an album that will be produced within the prison complex by RVP.
Tihar Prisons DIG R N Sharma said, “RVP Directors came forward with the idea after they read about our launch of sarangi maestro Kamal Sabri’s music album ‘Sarangi Redefined’ in Tihar. The album features vocals and music by Tihar’s inmates. So, just like there is ‘Indian Idol’, here we will have our own ‘Tihar Idol’. There are a lot of music lovers amongst our inmates and they are enthusiastic about it. A portion of the profits from the CD’s will utilised for the welfare of the inmates.”
RVP Directors owner Rahul Suneja said, “Once the forms are ready, we will distribute them in the prisons. We are setting up a studio to facilitate the recording for the album which will be done by the inmates. We will have three months of training and grooming sessions for the selected singers, musicians, composers and lyricists to create albums that will comprise about 32 songs. The albums are likely to have a Punjabi track, Hindi tracks, devotional songs and old classical Hindi songs.”
One of the largest in India, Tihar Jail houses around 11,000 prisoners. It has a rock band, ‘Flying souls’, programmes and extra curricular activities like yoga, sports and computer education to engage prisoners.
