MUMBAI: Amit Saigal, founder & editor of the music magazine Rock Street Journal has passed away. He had been an encouraging entity to several independent rock bands and musicians.
In January 1993, Saigal initiated the rock magazine â€?Rock Street Journal’ in Allahabad along with Shena Gamat to popularize the independent music scene in India.
With over 25 years of experience in the music business in India, Saigal was also closely involved in the club and the concert market.
He was also the founder of India’s popular music fests like Great Indian Rock Festival popularly known as GIR, Global Groove Festival & Convention, Pubrockfest, Jazz Utsav and Rocktoberfest and the latest inclusion India Music Week.
The rock singer Vishal Dadlani poured in his condolences throught twitter saying, “Amit Saigal, RIP. Wherever you’ve gone, I hope they have beer, good maal, and an acoustic guitar. Rock on, brother.” (sic.)
Folk-rock singer Raghu Dixit also tweeted, He did more for the Indian Rock scene than what he was credited for. Many Indian bands owe him one. Hard to believe he is gone….
