MUMBAI: Watching Paa is a musical treat for the audiences as there is no way they can escape Illayaraja’s melody. Like his last Bollywood score, â€?Cheeni Kum’, the maestro breathes life into the movie with his background score.
Songs from Paa did receive a thumbs up from the reviewers, but the songs get an edge when complimented with the visuals in the film.
The songs in the film are highly situational and Illayaraja has composed the tracks keeping in mind the theme of the film. A balanced melody of Carnatic and western music particularly jazz stays in the background. The harmonious musical pieces with violin as a predominant instrument stays with the movie-watchers after the film.

Gumm Summ Gumm sung by two youngsters Bhavatharini and Shravan is a fusion number with Carnatic and jazz. Halke Se Bole has thought-provoking lyrics by musician Swanand Kirkire.
Hichki Hichki is another situational track sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and shot amusingly with all the characters. Through the song, Vidya urges Auro not be the â€?hitch’ in Abhishek’s life and Amitabh is seen portraying the character of a cute coy kid.
The last track, Mere Paa rendered by Amitabh Bachchan manages to get a lump in your throat as the song plays just after Auro breathes his last. Bachchan succeeds to sound like a young boy suffering from a debilitating disease. Although there is minimal music arrangement in this track, Kirkire’s lyrics stand out as they talk about a child talking about his mother to his father.
Paa is one of the few films in Bollywood where background manages to create a niche and the composer sticks to the theme of the film. Lastly, if the news Paa’s music launch being cancelled as Illayaraja was busy with background scores stands true, well all I can say is it was worth it!!
