MUMBAI: Now, while Love Sex aur Dhoka doesn’t really have a separate background score as that would have made the seemingly realistic film â€?unrealistic’, whatever songs the film uses somehow seem underutilized – but keeping in mind the unconventional nature of the film, perhaps this is the liberty that a director of such a film can take? Probably, yes
So far, the music of LSD has got good reviews, and just like the film, the film’s music too is path breaking – from arrangements, to lyrics (though slightly crass) to its singing (by both Kailash Kher and Sneha Khanvalkar). The album has five tracks, but director Dibakar Banerjee has not used the songs from LSD’s album as ‘songs’ as one is used to seeing in a commercial bollywood film.
For instance, the song ‘Tu Gandi Acchi’ is used more like a character introduction of pop artiste Loki Local in the film. While ‘Mohabbat Bollywood Style’, a satirical take on the music of candy floss bollywood films, is also used as a passing song that builds up the screenplay. The punjabi fun track Tehnu TV Pe Wekhya by Kailash Kher is also one of those passing songs in the film. However, LSD team has already made a promotional video of the song (out on youtube) that features the full song with behind the scenes shots from the film. Additionally, one can see Kher in a new entertaining avatar – and not as the sufi singer we know him

The desperate sounding ‘I can’t hold it any longer’ is the only song with visuals that exceed a minute – but not more. But the way its potrayed in the film, makes it a must watch. Sung by the film’s music composer Sneha Khavalkar, this song is something that highlights the typical notions of the Hindi film industry, and its fascination for item songs and sleaze – wish this was a bit longer however.
The only full length track in LSD is the title track ‘Love Sex aur Dhoka’ which can be seen as end credit rolls. The song is shot as a music video featuring the pop music star Loki Local with an item girl (who plans a sting on him) and dancers at el – the characteristic music video stuff!
Though underused, songs are intelligently woven in the film’s script – however, music lovers who are not used to this kind of film making may get disappointed
Last word
Though more screen time for certain songs like â€?I can’t hold it any longer’, and â€?Tehnu TV Pe Wekhya would have been great (was it to save on budgets?), LSD’s music in the film is enjoyable sans the background score nevertheless. Lastly, kudos to Khanvalkar for coming up with such apt music for an unconventional story line.
