MUMBAI: Finding ways to monetise through user generated content and protecting copyright of owners was articulated at the Ficci Frames session on the final day on Thursday.
UGC could be making an impact in all arenas from social networking to entertainment, but the panel discussion revolved around the business model of UGC sites, copyright infringement of content, technological advancements and mitigation of risks.
Touching upon the prevalent copyright infringement on the UGC front, Anand & Anand’s head of copyright and entertainment law Jagdish Sagar said, The owner of content doesn’t have control on his content as internet has taken the rights. Websites are promoting infringement of copyright and the royalties collected are not distributed to the owners. In the user generated content only major media barons are taken into account, but what about innumerable websites indulging in infringement?… he questioned.

Content must be rectified for Copyrights before being uploaded. There can be a finger printing authenticity before uploading content on UGC sites. Also, there needs to be stringent laws to deal with infringement and more transparency on the content uploaders to bring them into account….
The problem is not in the Copyright law but its reinforcement, asserted Sagar. The amendments suggested in the Copyright Act now have stringent provision to deal with infringement on the digital front. At the registration stage itself, the UGC sites must ask for content owners before allowing to upload content, copyright infringement can be averted by taking this stage….
We need to institutionalise and educate the masses on pilferage of content over the net and monetise it. The IPL live telecast on YouTube is the first step towards monetizing through UGC sites,… Hungama Digital Media Entertainment MD and CEO Neeraj Roy said.

Referring to UGC as a boon, Intel Corporation software and solutions group director Narendra Bhandari said that the size of viewers has increased thanks to UGCs. It has activated eye balls across the globe and now the challenge is to monetise the content.
