MUMBAI: As there is a very thin line difference between naughty item songs and tracks with derogatory lyrics, it has become difficult for few playback singers to make a choice. Give Me Some Sunshine singer Suraj Jagan who hit the chord among youngsters with the award-winning movie ‘3 Idiots’ chooses to stay away from profane lyrics and is extremely particular while making a song selection.
Jagan who began his career working in ad jingles believes that he would love rendering a meaningful track which he can relate to. “I render those tracks that I enjoy singing or can associate with,” he says.
He points out that there is a major difference between funny item songs and the ones with bold lyrics. “There was a time when I was requested to sing a track that was derogatory. I had gone to the studio to record and when I found the song lyrically shameful I informed the composer that I cannot sing such a track and left the studio. After that incident, I pay immense attention on the lyrics specially if the composer I am working with is new,” he adds.

‘Teri Khatir’ sung by Jagan from the movie Aatma was an interesting number featuring him in the video in his rock-star look. Meanwhile, he has also rendered for ‘Khoon Choos Le’ which is a naughty number. “When I sang ‘Khoon Choos Le’, everyone in the studio burst out in laughter as they heard me sing it. Meanwhile, Aatma track which was based on supernatural happening was also fun rendering. It’s fun to do tracks that are really different and basically I should have fun with my songs,” he reveals.
Even though item songs is the latest trend adopted by singers in bollywood, Jagan refuses to join the league. “I do not have problem rendering for an item number if it is lyrically worth. I don’t have issues if others sing but I usually don’t get such offers and I have been careful about it as well.” he states.
Jagan who is currently busy with his tours and films confesses that he is traveling a lot than usual and that keeps him away from home.
