MUMBAI: Tech giant Apple has won a copyright infringement lawsuit against Korean handset maker Samsung in UK. The lawsuit was filed by Samsung as part of the two companies’ global patent battle over technology used on mobile devices.
According to judge Christopher Floyd of a UK court, Apple was not found guilty of infringing upon three of Samsung’s patents.
A Samsung spokesperson said, “Upon a thorough review of the judgment we will decide whether to file an appeal.”
Earlier, Samsung had claimed that Apple was infringing upon three of its patents related to processing and transmitting data over 3G mobile networks. Apple had stated that the patents were invalid and regardless. Samsung was required to license the technology under fair terms if it’s vital for connecting to modern networks, according to court filings.
Samsung said in a statement, “For decades, we have heavily invested in pioneering the development of technological innovations in the mobile industry. We will continue to take the measures necessary to protect our intellectual property rights.”
While the iPhone maker settled its lawsuits with HTC in November, the company continues to battle it out with Samsung for dominance in the international mobile phone market.
Apple had earlier lost a UK appeal ruling in October, whether Samsung’s Galaxy tablets infringed the design of the iPad, upholding a decision by a lower court that found several of Samsung’s tablets were not ‘cool’ enough to be confused with the iPad.
