Bangalore:  It was a Sunday night to remember as the spirited youth jostled with each other to catch a piece of the action. Egged on by RJ Prithvi and DJ Sameer, the students and guests danced, sang along and snapped pictures. Dozens of students arrived far earlier than they would ever consider getting up for class. It was another year of graduation day of College Champions…, the country’s biggest and most popular annual hunt for radio professionals from across few of the best colleges in each city  The venue exploded in colours and cheers as Aaron and Abhijeet from Sri. Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain University, were crowned winners of Radio One College Champions 2009 by none other than Charu Sharma at The Beach, Indiranagar on Sunday night. RJ Rakesh and RJ Anjaan from Radio One who were also part of the panel of judges also added colour to the event.

This was the third edition of Radio One College Champions- the annual talent hunt for radio professionals from Bangalore’s city colleges and the final leg of the competition was conducted On-Air from the studios of 94.3 Radio One with each of the teams being given an opportunity to showcase their talent by hosting their own radio show for a whole week on Radio One.

“Radio One College Champions’ is an exciting way to reach out to the young and tell them that they can be themselves and make it big,” said Shyju Varkey, Station head, Bangalore, 94.3 Radio One. The third edition of  the championship gave an opportunity for these young budding and promising Music Jockeys to showcase their talent by hosting their own radio show for a whole week on 94.3 Radio One,” added Shyju.

“I am completely overwhelmed by the talent on display at the Radio One College Champions. I would like to congratulate Radio One for organizing an event of this calibre and thank them for giving me an opportunity to be part of the celebrations,” said Mr. Charu Sharma.

“In a way, the third edition of the championship was a coming of age for Radio One College Champions. We have had three years of a successful run and now is the time to asses the effectiveness of the whole programme. Judging by the fact that most of the earlier winners have gone ahead and made it big in the entertainment industry, Radio One College Champions is a rip-roaring success,” added Mr. Varkey.

After the grueling auditions and even more intense competition rounds, 94.3 Radio One, the station for the fataafat generation crowned the winners of Radio One College Champions 2009  The competition was tight, but there were clear winners who the judges felt managed to capture the true spirit of the show in the most inspiring way.

After all the tension and drama over the last three weeks, it is really satisfying to end up on top  Music has always been my passion and I really hope that this is the big break that I have always dreamed about,… shared the winners Aaron and Abhijeet from Sri. Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain University.

Sharing their experiences, one of the finalists of the championship this year said, The competition was really tough and it takes more than a good voice to woo the audience.”

“There were hundreds of competitors initially and then it came down to a trickle. I was really nervous during the initial stages. But I’m happy that I could hold my ground and compete against the best. Big thanks to Radio One for giving me a shot at the Big Stage, “added another finalist of Radio One College Champions 2009.

Radio One College Champions had witnessed large scale participation for the auditions this year which were held in ten of Bangalore’s colleges with one team being selected for the final from each of the college  The final 10 teams were then trained at the Radio One Studio in various aspects of radio programming, production, jockeying amongst others during the last two weeks.

The ten teams who reached the finals of Radio One College Champions 2009 included Michelle and Manasa from Christ College, Qudsiya and Nagaroopini from Jyothi Nivas College, Aarun and Abhijit from Sri Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain University, Meghna and Hitha from Mount Carmel College, Akansha and Shobitha from Sindhi College, Arshi and Tushar from Garden City College, Prakruthi and Chinmayi from B.M.S College and Debashish and Priya from P.E.S College.

For being an MJ, its not essential that one must only have a very good voice. What is more crucial is that whoever is listening must get a feeling that this person speaking on radio is giving voice to their own heart. This can only come from long hours of training and dedication. We believe that hands on approach we have in training exciting new talents, will go a long away in preparing them for a career as MJ,” added Rakesh, Producer, Radio One-Bangalore

94.3 Radio One designed the live On-Air annual show to bring out the best radio talents and the best college presenters on radio (a team of two) through an intercollegiate competition. The selected colleges in each city across the country were identified as audition centres and registered students from various colleges auditioned at the venue. A panel of celebrity judges, after touring the colleges for auditions, drew up the final list of ten colleges, with a team comprising two, from each campus across each city. The selected ten teams were then ushered to the next level of the competition which was conducted On-Air from the studios of 94.3 Radio One in each city.

The process of choosing the final winner involves assessing the â€?radio worthiness’ – music knowledge, humour, ability to handle pressure and think on their feet and finally, how well team-mates combine with each other – which will be done by the Radio One team, along with the celebrity judges.
