Uday Bhawalkar has devoted himself to the development of the dhrupad style –- it has become his career and life`s purpose. He studied it for 12 years under Zia Fariduddin Dagar and Rudra-Veena maestro Zia Mohiuddin Dagar, in Bhopal and Mumbai, the long and rigorous training refining his appreciation for this music.
A Rashtriya Kumar Gandharva Samman awardee from the government of Madhya Pradesh, he has performed at many prominent music festivals in India and abroad, including Spic Macay for the last 16 years, and solo concerts in Europe, the USA, Canada and Mexico. Bhawalkar has performed at world music festivals in Europe and collaborated with artistes from other disciplines, such as contemporary dancer Astad Deboo, Ensemble Moderne in Germany and professional musicians from Spain and the USA. He has also contributed to the soundtracks of art films, such as Mani Kaul`s Cloud Door, Arun Khopkar`s Rasik Priya-Lok Priya, Aparna Sen`s Mr & Mrs Iyer and Amol Palekar`s Anahat.
Niladri Kumar, son and disciple of sitar maestro Kartick Kumar, has been hailed as one of the more serious young exponents of Indian classical music whose brilliance comes from years of learning and a lineage of five generations of sitar players. He has a profound understanding of the artistic aspects of diverse gharanas.
As orthodox or as creative as occasion demands, Niladri has a unique musical repertoire and technical dexterity. It wins him all kinds of audiences, both young and old. In March 2007, Niladri won the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar from the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
