MUMBAI: Bharat Ratna Smt Lata Mangeshkar was conferred with the first Sathkalaratna Purskar – 2014, instituted by Sathkalapeetam Payyanur, Kannur, Kerala, at the hands of Swamy Krishnananda Bharathy.
Present on the occasion were Padma Vibhushan Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, M.P. Abdu Samad Samadani, Guru Dr. Shyamala Bhave and other dignitaries at a special function organized in Mumbai on 14 February 2014.
Born in 1929 in a musical family of Pt. Dinanath, Lata Mangeshkar is one of the greatest singers of India, having sung for over 50 years for films of 20 different languages as also having recorded albums of all gazals, devotional and other songs. The national cultural icon, recorded her first song for a Marathi film in 1942 and for a Hindi Film in 1947. In 1991, the Guinness Book of World Records listed her as the most-recorded artist in the world with not less than 30,000 songs between 1948 and 1987.
A recipient of major musical awards, Lata Mangeshkar was conferred the highest civilian honour, ‘Bharat Ratna’ by the Indian Government in 2001. What’s significant is that the State Governments of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Goa, have each separately instituted annual ‘Lata Mangeshkar award’ for honouring senior musicians for lifetime achievement.
For Sathkalapeetam Payyanur, Kannur, Kerala, it is a great privilege to confer its first Sathkalaratna Purskar – 2014 on Lata Mangeshkar, the proverbial ‘Melody Queen of India’.
