MUMBAI: BBC Radio 1’s Nick Grimshaw this morning announced that Radio 1’s Teen Awards will return this October to celebrate the achievements of inspirational teenagers.
The annual event, now in its fifth year, will take place at The SSE Arena, Wembley, on Sunday 19 October to honour the UK’s unsung teenage heroes as well as the year’s best music, online, sport and entertainment stars.
Radio 1 Breakfast Show presenter Nick Grimshaw will return to host the extravaganza in 2014. Further details of the ceremony, including the artist line-up due to perform at the event will be announced over the coming months.Nick Grimshaw says, “The Teen Awards are one of my highlights of the year here at Radio 1. The crowd are always so up for it and the sheer noise of screams is out of control! I love the fact we honour teen heroes as well as pop stars. I can’t wait.”
Radio 1 and 1Xtra Controller, Ben Cooper says, “I want Radio 1 to celebrate and reflect the great work young people do in the UK and their positive contribution to society.”
At the heart of Radio 1’s Teen Awards are the Teen Heroes – when Radio 1 celebrates three of the year’s most outstanding youngsters. Radio 1 listeners can nominate anyone aged 12- to 17-years-old for the awards in recognition of their bravery, strength and selflessness. Previous listener nominations have included relatives, work colleagues, friends and carers.
A shortlist of nominees will be picked by the Radio 1 team before the winners are chosen by a panel of judges, which will include Teen Hero winner in 2013, Jeremiah Emmanuel, who campaigns against youth violence.
Jeremiah says, “Being one of BBC Radio 1’s Teen Heroes in 2013 was life changing. It opened up many opportunities for me and my story was shared across the nation. The Teen Awards recognises outstanding young achievers all over the country. This year I will be part of the judging panel for the awards. I hope that my expertise and experience in community work and representing young people will bring a much-needed, unique edge to the panel.”
The nominations for the 2014 Teen Heroes can be entered until 9pm on Sunday 17 August.
