PUNE: The Talayan Music Circle is organising a concert Sharddha Suman’ to pay a musical tribute to the late tabla maestro Kishan Maharaj of the Benares Gharana on his first death anniversary. The event is scheduled to be held on May 2 at 5.30 pm at the Ganesh Kala Krida Rangmanch.
On Friday, musician and founder-president of the trust Arvind Kumar Azad, who was a disciple of Maharaj, said: “The concert, supported by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, will feature eminent musicians and vocalists like Pt Kumar Bose Pt Kishan Maharaj’s senior-most disciple, Pt Rajan and Sajan Mishra. We also have the good fortune of witnessing a kathak recital by the famed Pt Birju Maharaj.”
The programme will start with a solo tabla recital by Bose, who will be accompanied by Subhash Dasakkar on the harmonium. And it will be followed by a performance by vocalist duo Pt Rajan-Sajan Mishra.
“The last programme which is a kathak performance by Pt Birju Maharaj and his senior most disciple Saswati Sen will be a one-of-a kind programme as he will be accompanied by Bose on the tabla and the Mishra duo with their vocal renditions,” said Azad.
The Talayan Music Circle, founded in 1995, not only organises concerts, but also conducts workshops and seminars by stalwarts and legends in the field of Indian classical music. Talayan provides free music training to underprivileged kids and also provides scholarships to talented and needy students.
“The circle was formed with the aim of promoting, encouraging and maintaining the high traditional values of the Indian classical music and was blessed by greats including Pt Bhimsen Joshi, Pt Jitendra Abhisheki and Pt Rohini Bhate on its inception,” Azad said, adding “There will be a programme to commemorate Pt Maharaj’s death anniversary every year.”
