MUMBAI: An established and popular name with the legion of dance music fans in India, Pearl – who has appearances at Ministry of Sound, London and at clubs like Pacha in Ibiza under her belt – features on the star-studded lineup of GlobalGathering 2014, one of UK’s most popular dance music festivals.
Held at an abandoned airfield, GlobalGathering has in the last decade become one of the must-attend festivals for dance music fans everywhere. The 14th edition of the festival – headlined by electro-rock act Prodigy, DJ and producer David Guetta, drum and bass UK act Chase and Status, Swedish DJ and producer Alesso and award-winning British rapper Tinie Tempah – will see a total of 143 artists, including Pearl, performing over 14 stages and two days, July 25-26, in Stratford-upon-Avon, more popularly known as the birthplace of English playwright, Shakespeare.
Pearl, who has been instrumental in setting up and nurturing a dance-music culture in India through her performances and her role as a promoter with Submerge for the past 14 years, has been slotted to play on Radio 1’s Essential Mix Live – after the iconic radio show hosted by Pete Tong on BBC Radio 1 – alongside dance music legends like Sasha, Eric Prydz, Nic Fanciulli and Tong himself.
“It would be hard to find a person in the electronic music industry who hasn’t heard at least one mix featured on this show. It is a hugely influential and prestigious show in our world. It’s an honour to be slotted to play on their stage and I’m really happy to be associated with Radio 1 in this manner. I haven’t been to GlobalGathering before but it’s been on my list of festivals to experience for a while now – and this just from all I’ve heard about it. It was quite a shock when I got a call to perform there. It’s a privilege to represent our country and community at this festival. I hope I can do it justice,” said Pearl of the opportunity to play at GlobalGathering.
Pearl has been the supporting act for countless tours in India, the likes of which include Nick Warren, Above and Beyond and John Digweed. In 2008, prominent dance music label, Defected, released the first-of its-kind compilation, Submerge in the House, with Pearl and Copyright. This was quickly followed by a global release of Defected Goa ’09, for which she shared the honours with none other than Simon Dunmore and the mighty ATFC.
Pearl went on to release a compilation on JOOF Recordings that was met with much acclaim. She was then invited to share a set to celebrate 10 years of John 00 Fleming’s radio show GTG, among guests like Trifonic, Liquid Soul and Airwave. Pearl was the first Indian DJ to play at the Ministry of Sound in London, quickly followed by a set at the legendary Pacha in Ibiza. She has played sold-out tours in cities as far and diverse as Tokyo, Paris, Dubai and Strasbourg.
Paul Hugo, managing director for GlobalGathering Group commented, “We’re really excited to welcome India’s top DJ to play at GlobalGathering UK this summer. Every year we try to embrace international DJs from different countries to underline the global theme of the festival, this year Pearl becomes the first Indian DJ to play the show. GlobalGathering constantly strives to represent the truly global nature of electronic music, bringing not only the biggest names in dance music across its many genres but also the very best local and up and coming artistes too. We can’t wait to see Pearl perform on the legendary Radio 1 Essential Mix live stage alongside the likes of Eric Prydz, Pete Tong & Eats Everything and Sasha & Nic Fanciulli on Saturday 26 July. “
