MUMBAI: Children often follow in their fathers’ footsteps. And when the fathers are famous musicians, the children sometimes have an edge or sometimes bear the brunt of unfair criticism. There are several in the Indian music industry who have carried on their fathers’ music legacy. On the occasion of Father’s Day, here’s listing a few, while wishing all our readers a fabulous Father’s Day!
Ravi Shankar, Anoushka Shankar, and Norah Jones
Winner of five Grammy awards, Pandit Ravi Shankar (1920 – 2012) was one of the best-known exponents of the sitar in the second half of the 20th century.

Pandit Ravi Shankar’s daughters Anoushka Shankar and Norah Jones both are successful musicians. Norah Jones became a successful musician in the 2000s, winning eight Grammy Awards in 2003. Anoushka Shankar was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best World Music Album in 2003. Anoushka and her father were both nominated for Best World Music Album at the 2013 Grammy Awards for separate albums.
Gulshan Kumar and Tulsi Kumar
The late Gulshan Kumar, the founder of the T-Series music label was also a Bollywood movie producer. His daughter Tulsi Kumar is a Bollywood playback singer and she released a music video featuring her sister Khushali Kumar in loving memory of her father in April this year. During the life of Gulshan Kumar, T-Series emerged as one of the top music labels in India. It continues to be a major label.

Bappi Lahiri and Bappa Lahiri:
Bappi Lahiri who brought the trend of synthesized disco music in Indian cinema is a well known music composer. He was popular in the 1980s and 1990s with filmi soundtracks like Wardat, Disco Dancer, Namak Halaal, Dance Dance, Commando, Gang Leader, Sailaab and Sharaabi among others.
His son Bappa Lahiri is an Indian music composer who has composed music for many Bollywood movies and music albums. Bappa Lahiri is known for his work on C Kkompany (2008), A Flat (2010) and Jai Veeru: Friends Forever (2009).
Udit Narayan and Aditya Narayan:
Winner of three National Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards, Udit Narayan is a well-known playback singer of Bollywood.
His son Aditya Narayan followed his dad’s footsteps and got into playback during his adolescence. Aditya’s famous songs are ‘Ishqyaun Dhishqyaun’, ‘Tattad Tattad’ from ‘Ram Leela’. Aditya also hosts Zee TV’s music reality show ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’.
Leslie Lewis and Divya Lewis
Leslie Lewis is an Indian singer and composer known for his work with Hariharan as the duo ‘Colonial Cousins’. Leslie started his career with advertising jingles and was nominated for awards from the Indian Academy of Advertising Film Art (IAAFA) in 1989 and received an award for his work. Singer and composer Leslie Lewis has launched a new album, this time foraying into the realm of Electronic Dance Music (EDM) with a group of young musicians which includes Divya Lewis and the children of acclaimed musicians such as Hariharan, Shankar Mahadevan, Loy Mendonsa, Kavita Krishnamurthy and L. Subramaniam.
Divya Lewis, who hails from a music background, is keen on pursuing music full-time as she plans to record original albums and perform across the country. She can compose music, play the piano and guitar as well.
The father and daughter duo performed ‘Aao na gale lagao na’ (Asha Bhosle’s legendary song from Mere Jeevan Saathi) as her debut performance on Coke Studio at MTV. Music conceived and created by Lesle Lewis.

Daboo Malik, Amaal Mallik, and Armaan Malik
Daboo Malik, son of music director Sardar Malik is an Indian music director, composer, singer, actor and scriptwriter in the Hindi film industry. Daboo Malik is famous for composing in films such as ‘Kasoor’, ‘Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge’, ‘Maine Dil Tujhko Diya’, ‘Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam’, ‘Girlfriend’, and ‘I Proud to Be an Indian’.
Daboo Malik’s sons both Amaal and Armaan followed his father’s path consequently.
Elder son of Daboo Malik, Amaal Mallik is a music composer and playback singer in the Bollywood.
Amaal Mallik was inclined towards music since the age of 8 and started learning piano during that time. He also studied piano and completed his course at Trinity College of Music (Western Classical, Jazz & Rock).
At the age of fifteen Amaal went on to assist music composer and background scorer Amar Mohile for the soundtrack of Sarkar and Shootout at Lokhandwala, and later moved on to producing music for his father in films. Recently the music proficiency of Amaal Mallik and the honey-laced voice of Shaan, and soulful lyrics by Rashmi Virag come together in a melodious combine in the new romantic single by T-series, ‘Tum Ho Toh Lagta Hai’.
In 2014 Amaal debuted his music journey in Bollywood with Salman Khan’s ‘Jai Ho’.
Youngest son of Daboo Malik, Armaan Malik is a former finalist of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs and also an Indian singer. Armaan has sung for over 100-200 commercials and about 16 films such as ‘Jai Ho’, ‘Bhootnath’, ‘Chillar Party’, ‘Hero’, ‘Baaghi’, ‘Ki and Ka’, ‘Junooniyat’ to name a few.
