Over the years, Wilco’s lineup has changed frequently. With only singer Jeff Tweedy and bassist John Stirratt remaining the original incarnation. The present members are guitarist Nels Cline (who is fabulous throughout this album), multi-instrumentalists Pat Sansone and Mikael Jorgensen, and drummer Glenn Kotche. Till date, the band has released seven studio albums, a live double album, and three collaborations: two with Billy Bragg, and one with The Minus 5.
To say the least, their recent self titled album is worth the bucks. Starting with the opening track Wilco (will comply) the song opens with a very familiar grunge sound – more on the lines of Nirvana. While Cobain was ruthless, one can figure that Jeff Tweedy appears much more much sober. The careless guitar lines and glancing piano work gives the song a unique texture. The band really stands out because of their songwriting poweress, and that’s what they offer in the next track Deeper Down. As Tweedy begins crooning, By the end of the bout, he was punched out. Deeper Down, He felt the comfort of a kiss,… you find yourself engrossed. After listening to the above two songs, expectations fairly rise.
The following song One Wing completely blows you out. An extremely well arranged song, One Wing has a bit of jazz, classic rock with some grunge garnishing. This is also a song that will remind you of Pink Floyd’s popular whammy guitar solo’s – of course, guitarist Nels Cline has done it in his own unique way, and is impressive throughout. Next one is a duet. We all know they have their own magic, but when Leslie Fiest joins front man Jeff Tweedy on vocals, you never know what to expect The duo sing You and I – an addictive romantic number with serene acoustic arrangements Though a little short, it makes you happy while it lasts. Overwhelming
Ironically, the next track You Never Know is much more popular than any other track on the album and has reached the no. 1 spot on the AAA charts – the bands first in twelve years! Nonetheless, you might figure that we have heard many Bob Dylan or Rolling Stones songs that are on the lines of You Never Know – its definitely not as exiting as other tracks on the list.
Last word
Undoubtedly, this Chicago based group is full of surprises in this self titled album. Primarily an alternative rock band that was started way back in 1994, Wilco’s sound is something that is easily recognizable, yet distinct. Though it would be unfair to box them, but after you hear them you do find traces of Coldplay, Keane, Hoobastank, Nirvana and Pink Floyd – isn’t that a strange combination? But Wilco, in their own way, still manage to entice Definetly a must hear album.
