Though the combo of Shimit Amin and Salim-Sulaiman worked magic in the 2007 Shah Rukh Khan starrer Chak De India, it seems the duo is only half as effective in the Ranbir Kapoor starrer Rocket Singh. The album has only three songs while the remaining tracks in the album are a mix of songs from previous Yashraj releases like Chak de (Chak De! India), Chhaliya (Tashan), Dance pe chance (Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi), Dil haara (Tashan), Haule haule (Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi), Jogi mahi (Bachna Ae Haseeno), Khuda jaane (Bachna Ae Haseeno) and Lucky boy (Bachna Ae Haseeno)
Benny Dayal sings the title track Pocket mein Rocket with the obvious ‘title track’ throw. Nevertheless, the song has decent word play from lyricist Jaideep Sahni; enough to keep you hooked. In the next track Gadbadi hadbadi, Sahni, to a large extent, again saves the day with his world play. Singer composer Vishal Dadlani delivers this energetic progressive track – but haven’t we had many similar tracks from him before? The song holds you in bits and parts. Not the best.
There’s only one good track (in fact, it’s exceptional) in the film and that is Pankho ko by Salim Merchant. This track instantly connects – thanks to the organic melody and minimal arrangements. To add, the meaningful lyrics by Sahni give the song a different high. Not to be missed.
