After Rock On, Shankar-Ehsaan- Loy are back with Luck By Chance. The album boasts of six tracks and one remix by Midival Punditz. Leaving aside Pyaar Ki Dastaan, all songs make a good hear. Javed Akhtar is especially great with lyrics in songs like O Rahi Re, Baawre and Sapnon Se Bhare Naina. The album also has Loy Mendonsa taking the mic and maybe after hearing him on the vocals you may exclaim, ‘Baawra ho gaya hai’ – He’s fabulous!
The trio spent just 15 days to work on this album and came up with six tracks. They went ahead with it since they felt that the songs were perfect for films situations. Too add, not a single track was redone.
Anyways, here’s a low down.
Yeh Zindagi Bhi
Singer: Loy Mendonsa, Shekhar Ravjiani
‘Yeh Zindagi Bhi’ delves into questions of the human mind. The melody is soothing especially at the ‘antara’. Shekhar Rajviani of Vishal Shekhar and Loy Medonsa take the mic for ‘Yeh Zindagi Bhi’. The track has a ‘cosmic’ feel – with echo’s and reverbs for effects – especially towards the end. Javed Akhtar is at his poetic best while expressing deep philosophies with simple lines (‘Choone hain taare isse.. chhahiye saare isse’). This track makes for the perfect mood when you are on that long drive.
Baawre
Singer: Loy Mendonsa, Shankar Mahadevan
Welcome ‘Loy the singer’ in ‘Baawre’. It’s interesting to hear Loy Medonsa pull-off that Rajasthani folk accent (hos haara, jos haara- bravo!!) with such ease. Baawre is a fast paced song with ethnic Indian arrangements (dholak, sarangi, tabla, and harmonium). Shankar joins him midway and adds a lot more fun with his insertions. Javed Akhtar efficiently expresses the fun quotient through words. The operatic interlude at 2:57 is quite impressive, something which entirely changes the character of the song. In sum, it’s a fun crazy song. But can we know what was that joke cracked at 2:34?
This song is picturised for a circus scene and also has traditional Manganyar singers contributing.
Pyaar Ki Dastaan
Singer: Amit Paul, Mahalakshmi Iyer
The title ‘Pyaar Ki Dastaan’ sounds quondam. From the words, it seems like a romantic song shot outdoor – pretty much like the ‘running-around-tree’ song. The melody of the song is reminiscent of the early 90’s era. Unfortunately, Amit Paul’s voice doesn’t show much character while Mahalaskshmi Iyer is wasted IMHO. This is the only track which fails to create any magic. Nevertheless, wait till you see it on-screen.
Yeh Aaj Kya Ho Gaya
Singer: Sunidhi Chauhan
‘Yeh Aaj Kya Ho Gaya’ is a peppy track and Sunidhi Chauhan’s is known to pull-off such tracks with ease. The song has a soft-rock feel to it – thanks to Ehsaans riffs and occasional licks. The lyrics by Akhtar are brilliant. From the words it may sound like a ‘girlie’ track, but there’s no harm in enjoying good music, no matter whom it appeals to. Let this one grow.
O Rahi Re
Singer: Shankar Mahadevan
Sufi classical ‘O Rahi Re’ starts with an easy-laid back guitar strumming. Shankar Mahadevan’s has a lingering approach with the vocals. It’s a traveler’s song – or say song for the travelers of ‘life’. The philosophical wordplay by Javed Akhtar is noteworthy. This is the kind of melody we all love to hum along with our friends and feel nostalgic. ‘O Rahi Re’ needs just one play to get hooked.
Sapnon Se Bhare Naina
Singer: Shankar Mahadevan
‘Sapnon Se Bhare Naina’ starts with a distinct bass-line. Structured on raag Bhairavi, Sapnon Se Bhare Naina is a speeding melancholic track where Shankar Mahadevan adds a brilliant feel with his vocals. Undoubtedly, Shankar’s improvisations on this track are unsurpassable. Javed Akhtar remains deep with his poetic ideas.
