The music of Jail was largely anticipated, as it features the vocal genius Lata Mangeshkar singing a film song after a long time. Also, Jail has two composers on board – Shamir Tandon and duo Toshi and Sharib Sabri. But unfortunately, both fail to impress
The best…
Data Sun Le sung by Lata Mageshkar is undoubtedly the best on the album – and to get to hear Lata Mangeshkar after a long time is worth every second. Composed by Shamir Tandon (Page 3, Acid Factory), the song is of a spiritual nature. Even though the melody takes a little long to grow, it’s Lata Mageshkar’s soulful voice which lifts up the song to a different level. The lyrics by Ajay Garg are simple, but meaningful. I’d like to mention the chorus that reminds of arrangements of the good old days.
Milke Yun Lagaa by Sharib-Toshi is the second best on the album. A out an out rock number, for this song, the duo has experimented with a sound that wisely incorporates the progressive rock with Indian melody at core. The lyrics and melody are great, so is the singing by Sharib, and its something with a relatively longer shelf life.
Practically, the album serves no purpose besides the two above mentioned songs, but here’s a low-down on the appalling tunes the album offers as we go ahead
And the rest….
For instance, the intro hook of the song Sainya Ve (composed by Sharib-Toshi) is used in so many songs – that’s the first thing that puts you off. Do all the rock heavy numbers need to have this ‘Papa Roach-inspired-last resort-lick? I wonder. It’s the same stuff that American bands gave away 20 years ago, and now we are recycling it expecting listeners to gobble it up as a new? Sharib and Toshi are great composers and singers, but instead of experimenting, they opt for something that is safe- sadly, that’s exactly what makes Sainya Ve passable.
Item song Bareily Ke Bazzar Mein also falls on the same line. Composed by Shamir Tandon, the song is an outright disaster – what do I say? Lets hope this is interwoven in the story line, but the predictable thump tune just makes you hit the ‘next’. Whatever the reason maybe
Last word
The only thing that gives weight to this album is the voice of Lata Mageshkar. You would have guessed that even if I had not mentioned.
