Shaitan director Bejoy Nambair is back with his latest flick David, a bi-lingual movie which will feature in Hindi and Tamil. In Tamil, David spans two decades, with two different Davids whereas in Hindi there are three David played by Neil Nitin Mukesh, Vinay Virmani, and Vikram. Trailer seems quiet appealing but most deserving appreciation would be the songs in the film as it includes 15 tracks with eight composers and around 18 singers. It’s a real effort to put in such a the musical side of the movie.
Siddharth Basrur’s croons for the theme song Ghum Huye (The Theme of David). The trance beats is surely touching the mark of the new generation music. Play of mysterious effect with music is nice but overall the song is not that appealing for you to listen. Lyricist Ankur Tewari’s words lack the ability to create much magic as Basrur sings them. Not a very wonderful built up song.
Second track ‘Mast Kalandar’ was also the part of the trailer used to promote the film. Rekha Bharadwaj has beautifully sung with her rustic voice with light music in the start which is really interesting. Mikey McCleary’s composition along with Bharadwaj’s voice has been put together with ease which makes the song clean and smooth. The mix of harmonium and dholak chorus does not undermine the voice of Bharadwaj that makes the track pretty good to hear. McCleary and Gaurav Godkhindi have composed the rock version of ‘Mast Kalandar’ which is also striking and gives listeners an option to select from both ‘Mast Kalandar’ songs.
‘Tore Matware Naina’ is a fusion, a neat one. Nirali Kartik and Joyshanti are singing in the classical style in this fusion. Funky guitar and flute is the outstanding instruments that makes the fusion a good one to hear. Joyshanti, Pt. Laghulal and Maatibaani are the lyricists for this song. French influence is there throughout but the start when Joyshanti’s opens with the French verses is a lovely one. It’s kind of a west meets Indian version and this union is engaging.
Snapping fingers followed by light guitar and vocals of Naresh Iyer is melodic. After a while you could hear Shweta Pandit also singing for the track ‘Tere Mere Pyaar Ki’. Gopal Datt has penned the lyrics for the track. The start of the track is interesting but the lyrics and music drops as it proceeds. Prashant Pillai’s effort to take you into a romantic journey was not completely met because of the lyrics that lost the magic in between but it gains the pace at the end.
Modern Mafia’s Hindi version of Arnie, ‘Bandhay’ gets his place in David. The English phunk band aggression has not even gone down a bit in the Hindi version of Arnie. A hard rock number is penned by Ankur Tewari. It is a really short song based to introduce David, the guitarist in the movie.
After all the hard music, we have some slow music by Anirudh for ‘Yun Hi Re’. The thunder bolt followed by flute and then Swetha Mohan vocals get you to some beautiful side of love. Classical touch with the sitar is really beautiful it’s not the distinctive romantic number and Turaz lyrics is reporting the struggle of the beautiful emotion -love. It’s a five minutes song and at any point of time your interest doesn’t fade away, that’s the amazing part of the song.
Remo Fernandes ‘Maria Pitache’ is featuring in the movie. One of the energetic songs that you could have heard in many goan celebrations also works its magic. Flutes, conga sound and guitar melody gets you to the land of Goa and the festivity feel of the land. Remo Fernandes himself has sung and lyrics are penned along with Abhijeet Deshpande. Konkani and Hindi lyrics combination is enjoyable. The song has a sweet force that tells you to leave your work and dance without any thought.
Prashant Pillai’s ‘Rab Di’ is a sufi number. Turaz lyrics is also meaningful and when Kartik sings it you cannot just stop going into the trance this song gets you into. If you don’t enjoy this version then you have ‘The Rab Step Version’ which will give you an option to opt and listen but please don’t skip this song because of its lyrics.
Mikey McCleary has composed this track as well. Lyrics played a stunning part in the song ‘Out Of Control’. Mikey McCleary was accompanied by Priti Pillai to penning the lyrics. Nikhil D’Souza leads the track followed by Priti Pillai also giving her relaxing voice. D’Souza’s warm vocal is also relaxing as well where you just feel like resting and enjoying. In addition, there is also a ‘Choir Version’ of the song that has Marianne and Tara Sitaria coming together.
Prashant Pillai gets Lucky Ali to singing for ‘Ya Hussain’. It is good to hear Ali in Pillai’s experimental song with all the clapping and drums and backup vocals that is really fascinating and enjoyable. Enjoy this song as it’s not one of the typical Ali’s work but different set of work that also displays different side of Ali. Turaz has given some good lyrics. Do tap your leg when you hear the song that’s when you get the flavor of the song entering your mind.
‘Three kills’ is the situational track by ‘The Light Years Explode’ who has composed some really hard rock music that is penned by Aaron Carvalho. Saurabh Roy and Carvalho have rendered for the track. The heavy rock music is entirely in English; don’t expect to hear any Hindi verses in this one like other rock tracks don’t had equal mix of English and Hindi. Use of drum is quiet prominent.
Goan Flavour is back again with Remo Fernades’ Light House Symphony. Melodious guitar and whistling takes you back to those beaches of Goa where you feel like laying down and listen to this goan flavored track.
It’s an experiment where many musicians worked to create music for a single movie. The vast extended music and mix was interesting as a music listener but I don’t know how well it does for the movie. But overall the music was new pack of surprise for the year 2013 and will be a good appetizer . All the songs in this album are not typical bollywood numbers but has flavour of many fusion and mixes.
