It was Caillat’s MySpace profile that led her to become the number-one unsigned singer in her genre for four consecutive months after debut single Bubbly. The 24-year-old Californian singer-songwriter Colbie Caillat is now back with her second album Breakthrough.
For this album, Caillat had set up a writing camp in Hawaii and invited collaborators Jason Reeves (who features on the song Droplets on the album) and Mikal Blue along with American Idol Judge and songwriter Kara DioGuardi. It’s was reported that out of the 50 songs that were written during this period, 20 were recorded, and finally 12 made it to the final list based on fan reaction during a performance of the recorded songs.
Breakthrough suggests that – as far as songwriting goes, Caillat has certainly grown. The melodies too are fresh, but you may most likely feel we have heard those exploding chorus lines. In all, the arrangements are fresh… but on many occasions Caillat has played it safe. As far as the theme goes – it’s about all the stuff that you go through when you are in love with your friend
The album opens with the energetic track â€?I Won’t’. Its the heady drums and catchy y chorus line that gets you hooked instantly. The album also includes hit single Fallin’ For You that Calliat released much before. This song will surely strike a chord with any teenager (or grown ups too!!) The next song I Never Told You speaks about missing an opportunity to tell your friend about how you feel about him/her. This slow placed song is well written, but the melody doesn’t hold one for long.

Breakthrough is a good album, but there are no surprises (except I Won’t, Fallin’ For You and Break Through) In this second album, Caillat has experimented with the sound and arrangements to an extent, but has largely played safe. Having said that, this has got some highlights you should not miss!
