We know what the theme of 3 idiots is – roughly based on Chetan Bhagats novel Five Point Someone, the film revolves around life of IIT students. Now, the interesting part is, without much effort, Shantanu Moitra and Swanand Kirkire manage to recreate this storyline – through lyrics, songs, and the over all sound. Let me add this, the music of this film has a ‘visual’ appeal to it (always a plus!!) and an element that gives wind to the imagination of the listeners. So, there is no doubt the film is going to have a maximum impact. Lets go to the songs now

The album opens with All izz well which is sort of a satirical pull on the education system and the pressures the youth in India has to face. Though the song has a catchy chorus line, its the lyrics that keeps the listener hooked – when was the last time you heard lines like – “Scholarship ki pi gaya  daru gum phir mita nahi , agarbatti raakh hogayi God tu phir bhi dikha nahin!” hard hitting, right? Now, in a country which has the largest percentage of young population below 25 years of age – there’s no doubt why this song won’t connect. Singers Swanand Kirkire, Shaan and Sonu Niigaam all are… well, awesome. The remix version of this song is double the power and tastefully done.

Zoobi Doobi has a sweet retro flavor to it. Maybe this is the same song where Aamir and team give an ode to Raj Kapoor’s ‘Pyaar Hua Ikraar Hua’ for an Aamir-Kareena romantic sequence. Singer Shreya Ghoshal and Sonu Niigaam sound enchanting, hip and fresh like never before. This song also has a unavoidable bang bang remix version – but I wouldn’t suggest that

After two fun tracks, the track Behti hawa sa tha woh mellows down the mood a bit. This song is a retrospective track sung by s Shaan and Shantanu Moitra – this sounds like a situational track in the film. Lyrics by Kirkire are motivating, besides the song has interesting folk arrangements. This song may not be catchy, but as mentioned above, its one of the songs with a lot of visual feel

The next track Give me some sunshine is a ‘get a life’ song with a charm of RDB’s Rubaru. Loaded with clean guitar progressions and harmonica, this track features somber vocals (no growling!) by Suraj Jagan (Zehreeley ‘Rock On’ fame). Actor Sharman Joshi also joins the track with dramatic dialogues stating ironical facts about life of a student – so you’ll hear lines like, “Khandho ko kitaabo ne jhukaaya, riswat dena toh khud papa ne sikhaya!”

Sonu Niigaam comes back once again with Jaane Nahin Denge Tujhe. This power track is a song of hope probably picturised on loss of a friend. Its not something with a catchy â€?melody’, but the song has high emotional value and Niigaam, after a long time, seems have got some quality stuff under his belt.

OUR PICK

All izz well- original and remix

Zoobi Doobi

Give me some sunshine

The music of 3 Idiots will touch hearts for it raises issues known and faced by the youth. Shantanu Moitra music for this film seems balanced and more importantly â€?relevant’  – he never goes overboard. As far as Swanand Kirkire goes, he has hit it in the bulls eye. Good aim.
