MUMBAI: SickFlip, the bass-heavy experimental solo project of Mumbai-based producer Sarvesh Shrivastava, releases The Ladakh Project later this month. Shot and recorded entirely in the breathtaking landscapes of the region of Ladakh, The Ladakh Project takes the form of a 5-track EP, a stunning audio-visual showcase, as well as a music video. Created in collaboration with The Outbox Project – a collective of photographers, cinematographers and visual artists – the showcase comprises experimental, often ambient and minimal tunes made on site, contrasted with those of the surrounding land of Ladakh, coupled with the gorgeous views the region offers. The EP will be released for free download on the 22nd of August, with a multi-city tour showcasing the audio-visual project. The music video will be out on the 18th of August.
After an eye-opening trip to Ladakh in 2013, SickFlip returned in May this year, this time with The Outbox Project, with the purpose of spending his time making music for a new EP, as well as an audio-visual project. The resulting audio-visual is a surreal 45-minute long experience that captures the essence of the land, both visually and aurally. Besides writing content whilst sitting on hilltops overlooking unimaginable beauty from Nubra Valley to Pangong lake, SickFlip has also craftily included sounds from the region itself, such as those of monks chanting and the rivers flowing. The eclectic mix of visuals by The Outbox Project include panoramic shots of the gorgeous Pangong lake, white sand deserts and places of religious and spiritual worship. Says SickFlip, “After my trip to Ladakh in 2013 with friends, I felt the need to return with my gear, so I could transfigure my interpretation of this experience into music. I wanted this trip to be about the entire experience, so I got The Outbox Project collective on board to capture the essence of our journey through time-lapse, videos and still photography over our two weeks in Ladakh. The purpose of this trip was to be able to come back and share the experience with audiences through the audio-visual.”
With his penchant for sounds that vary from serene and melodic to massively bass-heavy, in just a couple of years, SickFlip has managed to earn himself the reputation of being one of the more interesting and experimental young producers in the circuit. Last year included the release of two EP’s for the DJ/producer, Bipolar and Basswar, that truly saw him coming into his own. Earlier this year he contributed a remix of New Delhi Nuttah to Nucleya’s Koocha Monster Remix EP, as well as a remix of Won’t You to Sandunes’ Ever Bridge Remixed EP. The past year has also had him play huge gigs around the country, including opening for Calyx and TeeBee at Bass Camp Festival, as well as slots at festivals such as Sunburn, Bacardi NH7 Weekender and Enchanted Valley Carnival.
