MUMBAI: Kunaal Gurbaxani aka Gurbax just released his debut EP Heady Cuts. He is known as one of the fastest rising names in the country’s Electronic Dance Music scene. This twenty-something Bengaluru-based producer’s love for heavy music and bass lines led him to explore different spectrums of music. Eventually, making him switch from his Punk/ Metal playing gig to Bass music over the years.
The treatment and tonality of music that Gurbax is constantly striving towards has brought him acknowledgement, success and an array of important platforms to perform fairly early in his career.
Now, with the launch of his debut EP – Heady Cuts (released 25 October 2017), he’s pulling back no punches with a wide variety to showcase, ranging from Dub step to Electro Hip-Hop and Soul among other genres, pushing the boundaries of what is bass music is commonly known to be in the country.

While Gurbax’s way of expressing his musicality maybe electronic – organic music inputs are inherent in his music. So, the listener would find everything from the strains of the Sarangi to live guitars&vocals as also the sounds of a saxophone recorded live.
Apart from playing at several national and international shows and prestigious platforms such ADE (Amsterdam Dance Event), he has received millions of hits for his previous single releases- namely- Boom Shankar, Get It feat. Wazulu along with remixes of pop-star Kiiara and the all-time soul classic Ain’t No Sunshine.
Kunaal aka Gurbax’s journey started in the city of Bengaluru, where he played the guitar in punk rock and thrash metal bands. His move to Atlanta for later studies came as a blessing, “since it was there that he discovered his love for bass-music,” says the young producer.
“It really was an easy transition. They both encompassed my love for heavy music, however, I never really related to the metal culture of angst and destruction. With the bass scene, on the other hand, it was more than just the music – there was a sense of family in the underground culture of pure energy, love and happiness that really resonated with me and drew me in,” says Kunaal.
A self-taught DJ and Ableton- certified producer from the Dubspot School of Music Production in New York City, he has played shows in and around Atlanta and NYC as also other parts of the world including a recent performance at ADE (Amsterdam Dance Event) and is now looking to catalyse the bass music movement in India.
In a short span of three years since he moved back to India, he has managed to play in every corner of Indian sub-continent and shared the stage with several reputed artists such as Steve Aoki, Marshmello, NGHTMRE, Slander, Troyboi, Herobust, David Satori (Beats Antique), Christina Novelli, Hang Massive, GANZ and GAUDI, among others.
Kunaal has also successfully curated one of India’s first fully crowd-funded music video + music and art festival called the Boom Shankar Festival in Bengaluru which drew the attention of people across the country and globe.
One of the incentives for contributing towards the crowd-funding campaign was an invite to the festival (where the live music video shoot was taking place) and a chance to feature in the video.
