NEW DELHI: Zonal competitions for the second World Karaoke Championship scheduled to be held in Finland in November will begin on 13 September at the V Spot Café Bar in Gurgaon.
The Gurgaon competition will be followed by the east zone finals on 14 September in Kolkata (Illusion Lounge), the west zone on 16 September in Mumbai (Irish House), and the southern zone on 20 September in Hyderabad (10 Downing Street).
Six Finalists from each zone will compete at the KWC Indian Grand Finale on 7 October in Mumbai.
United Spirits Limited president and managing director Ashok Kapoor said, “It’s been a constant endeavour for the past decade to provide a unique platform to our customers to celebrate the spirit of friendship. Celebrating this spirit of friendship, we are delighted to bring to our consumers to be a part of the Karaoke World Championship.”
Conducted annually, the Karaoke World Championships draws participation globally to battle for the World Championship Title. The member countries conduct local and national karaoke competitions and send winners to participate in the Karaoke World Championships (KWC).
Instrumental in the Karaoke face change of India since 2002, legendary KJ Savio D’Sa said, “The unique aspect of KWC is that unlike a reality show, there are no live cameras to add to the nervousness of contestants. The most remarkable feature of karaoke is that the unpolished and the wildest singers get the loudest round of applause. KWC hopes to get even more wicked, wackier and wilder this year expecting such raw talent.”
A male and a female would be selected to take part in the World Championship finals. Groups of Friends can participate in India, but will not feature in the finals in Finland.
In India, the participants will get to sing primarily English and only a few select Hindi film songs. The Zonal and India Finale will be judged by three judges.
The winners of the championship organized in association with Nokia Lumia will get Rs 18 lakhs in prizes, apart from the all-expenses paid visit to Finland. The Indian winners also stand a chance to record an album exclusively for Planet M, KWC’s retail partner. The championships are also being conducted in selected Flagship stores of Plant M in India.
The competition, which is being strategized and executed by Nash Events, has got a bigger and better this year, comprising of a variety of singers across 15 cities and 30 venues. The activity kicked off at a grass root level with select outlets hosting over 150 venue trials across 15 cities in India – Delhi NCR, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Shillong, Jaipur, Guwahati, Patna, Indore, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and Goa.
Nash Events director Lalit Kewalramani said, “Local Karaoke competitions features regularly in various clubs in India but this is unique in itself as it has a credibility of its own. Nothing can be bigger than this when it comes to making a Karaoke Competition. This is the epitome and is like a World Cup for Karaoke. Sponsors like McDowell No. 1 Soda, Nokia and Visit Finland showed an immediate interest in this fantastic event, which offers fun, music and interesting nightlife. We have created a foundation for the event last year and this year it has only grown in size and stature!”
The competition will have a solo and a McDowell’s No. 1 Karaoke Friendzy Round which gives a chance to a group of friends to accompany the ultimate winners to Finland, although the Group of Friends cannot take part.
The championship’s ambassador and actor Meiyang Chang will also judge the contestants along with local judges in different cities across the country.
