MUMBAI: Newbie music label Zee Music Company (ZMC) has signed a deal with Sony Music for the digital exploitation of their newly acquired Bollywood catalogue. Sources confirmed this development to Radioandmusic.com.
Without revealing much on the deal, sources said there are things that need to be worked on. During ZMC’s announcement, the company had disclosed its plans to acquire the music rights of over 20 major motion pictures in the financial year 2014-15.
Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL) announced its foray into the music label space in March.
The label company has partnered with Fox Star Studios and will be acquiring music of the five Hindi releases for the year including the Saif Ali Khan and Riteish Deshmukh starrer ‘Humshakals’, Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif starrer ‘Bang Bang’ and one of the most anticipated releases of the year ‘Bombay Velvet’ starring Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma.
ZMC has already acquired music rights of ‘Holiday’ which is composed by Pritam and penned by Irshad Kamil; and ‘Hawaa Hawaai’- most of the tracks of the film are composed by Hitesh Sonik. Holiday’s track ‘Tu Hi Toh Hai’ which is their official video song has already garnered more than six lakh views on Youtube.
ZMC has partnered with big players like Dharma Productions, Excel Entertainment and other top studios, and projects with them will be revealed soon.
Sony Music, which has handed over its exclusive rights of marketing and distribution to Sony DADC, has been entirely concentrating on digital platforms like iTunes, Gaana, Saavn and others for a while now. On the Youtube front, Sony Music has around 942,959 subscribers.
