MUMBAI: Ustad Zakir Husain launched The Legacy, an album of Indian folk songs by Ustad Sultan Khan and his son Sabir Khan, on Monday. Released by Worldwide Records, the album has seven songs, of which Deepak Pandit has arranged six songs and Imran Khan has arranged and programmed one.
Sabir Khan complements the soothing vocals of Ustad Sultan Khan with the sarangi. The lyrics of the album are like those from the traditional songs of Rajasthan and Gujarat, and the melodies are based on stories with an emotional quotient. The song Tale of Fairies has Ustad Sultan Khan and Akriti Kakkar on vocals, while Nostalgia features Sabir Khan’s voice.
The launch began with a stage performance by Ustad Sultan Khan on vocals, with Deepak Pandit accompanying on the violin and Sabir Khan on sarangi. Jagjit Singh, present on the occasion, joked that Khan sahab was not dressed for the occasion while Vishal Bhardwaj hesitated to speak in front of his guru on stage Personalities like Murtuza Mustafa, Qadeer Mustafa, Talat Aziz, ShahBaaz Khan, Pradip Garodia, Parthiv Gohil, Salim Merchant and Sandesh Sandhliya were present to pay their respects for Khan sahab’s album launch
