MUMBAI: With a number of concerts on the cards, playback singer-music director Roop Kumar Rathod is recently working on three non-film music albums.
Two are ghazal albums and one is based on the new band culture. Rathod said that one ghazal album includes newly arranged old works of great maestros, while other includes work by him and his wife Sunali Rathod.
Speaking on the third album with Radioandmusic.com, Rathod said, “I am working on an album that is based more on band culture because this culture is very popular. We are targeting the younger generation who feels that Indian music is not for the youth and is not appealing. So to attract them we are doing the album.”
He added, “There is a music that shakes your mind and there is other music that shakes your body. Classical shakes your mind. We try to balance both and also make people happy and we have to get young generation to enjoy all forms of music.”
Highlighting the challenges in non-film music, he stated, “It’s a big challenge to make label companies understand the existence of non-film genre. Unfortunately, there was a time when there were ghazal albums and music videos. Now the thing is that promotion has gone down but albums are still coming out. It’s not reaching the mass audience. The existing fans know my work but we don’t have new fans as the new release doesn’t reach them. Indian music has many genres-sufi, devotional, semi-classical and folk amongst others, it’s just that all should listen, understand and enjoy it.”
