MUMBAI: Now that our musicians have started giving a variety of music (movie and singles), every musician is moving on the same track. Nikhita Gandhi, who has given the industry some amazing tracks released her first single, Humshakal.
On asking the singer, how Humshakal actually happened, she says, “I have been writing songs since I was a kid, mostly in English. I kept making stuff and wanted to release one this year. Humshakal was in English and then while I was on my way travelling for a gig, I made a dummy tune. I wanted to do the song in Hindi as my audience is mostly Hindi. I was very excited about this because it was a music video, shot by me and my friend Shashwat Singh and I edited the video. The entire process took around two to three months as I was travelling and doing other stuff.”

She further shares an interesting story on how the video was shot. “I went for my sister’s wedding and my friend and I went on a backpack tour for a week to Europe. We shot each other’s songs as he was also working for his single. We shot in foreign locations but did not want it to look too obvious with the locations and stuff. I wanted to have a western but a mutual vibe. It was a fully homemade project,” says the Mujhe Chaand Pe Le Chalo singer.

Every song or single created has an objective that only the maker can explain well. Nikhita, who has sung, composed as well as produced her first single, explains the objective well. “Humshakal was a song that I felt very bold to work on because, in most of the songs, I get stuck with situations. In the video, I got to be myself, wanted to be natural on-field. Talking about the objective, lyrically if I say, the song is about a woman, who is done fooling around and is finding some meaning in life,” adds the singer.
As she has the experience to work on Bollywood and independent projects, it was the right time to ask her, which space she enjoys the most. To this, she says, “To be honest I enjoy, both, Bollywood and independent projects in a very different way. Working on singles extracts a different side of you. Independent single has a lot of pressure on me. I have to check up on myself if I am doing things right. While doing a movie project, you have someone else to testify that you are doing a fine job.”
Recently, Nikhita has given some amazing tracks to the industry. He most recognized ones are Dhyanchand from Manmarziyaan, Aao Kabhi Haveli Pe from Stree and a soon-to be-releasing song Sawarne Lage from Mitron.
“It was for the first ever song for which, Amit Trivedi and I dubbed it a year ago. After that, I recorded a few more, which are still under the pipeline. Amit called me in the studios and asked if I can rap and I said yes! It was my first rap and it was an amazing experience. I would not mind raping often as I had a lot of fun. Also, it would be great to be one as there are not many female rappers in the industry.
She further continues talking about Aao Kabhi Haveli Pe, “While working on the song for Stree, we first tried my bit into a rap form, but later Badshah was roped in and of course they won’t ask him to sing! So we designed my lyrics and my vocals then turned them into a song. It was fun working with Sachin-Jigar. I have mostly jammed with Jigar and he is a fun person hanging around as a friend.”
Not many know that Nikhita is a dentist by profession and still practices her dentistry. “I feel guilty that I do not practice it. Also, that people will not like coming to someone, who practices a few hours only, even I don’t trust myself (she giggles). So I keep doing campaigns like free dental checkups for children and stuff so that I feel my purpose is being served by free dental checkups,” ends the singer.
