MUMBAI: After T-series came out to defend themselves against the remark actor-producer of ‘One By Two’ Abhay Deol made against the “giant label company”, it was time for Viacom 18 to issue a statement.
On 15 January, T-series issued a statement questioning Viacom 18’s role, bringing a new twist to the situation. To put the dispute to rest, Viacom18 Motion Pictures issued a statement of their own, trying to calm both parties.
The company stated, “There have been lots of speculations in the media on this issue of music rights of our film ‘One by Two’ and a few observations made without fully understanding the facts. We wish to clarify that T- series legitimately holds the rights to the music of ‘One by Two’ and producers are required to provide them the relevant link documents.”
Viacom 18 tried mending the situation by saying, “There was some misunderstanding regarding the factual positions and we are happy the same stands clarified and resolved between all parties. Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Abhay Deol being the producers, now look forward to the release of music on all platforms and T-series is happy to provide their support to ensure ‘One by Two’ gets the best release.”
The whole affair received support from music fraternity.
Ehsaan Noorani tweeted, “Whatever happens whether the music releases or not @OneByTwoFilm needs all your support people.”
Anushka Manchanda who sung the track Kaboom for the film ‘One By Two’, said, “I read about it in a couple of articles. Abhay Deol is an artiste and maybe, he looks at things differently. Music labels and everyone function differently. You cannot expect a production house to think like an artiste, and vice versa. All the musicians are standing by him. These, mind you, are musicians who has been part of the industry for as long as I can remember and have established their credibility in more ways than one. It is good for all the singers. I have never faced any problems from label companies personally but then again, these are all new movements. They have my full support. We are all in it together.” She also added that she did not have to sign any funny contract for ‘Kaboom’. Everything was pretty standard.
“The music fraternity has gathered together for a press conference in support of artistes’ rights,” Sonu Nigam retweeted.
Kailesh Kher tweeted, “Appreciate Abhay Deols Stand, he had choice but he chose to save art and artistes from illegal contracts. Hope all actors’ producers join this.” Kher also tweeted, “Not only one but many companies are working as alliance to practice unlawfulness this is the time to bring a historical change in music Abhay.”
ISRA (Indian Singers Rights Association) managing director Sanjay Tandon told Radioandmusic.com, “It is an unnecessary issue that has blown out of proportion. The music company and producers should wake up and try things that do not break law. I do not know why people are trying different things when the law is so clear. The younger lot of musician, singers, song-writers have realised that they cannot be taken for a ride.”
Singer Shibani Kashyap told Radioandmusic.com, “Abhay Deol has done a good job. Salute to him and Kudos to him.” When asked if she is part of ISRA, she said, “We are all singers and it is for us. But once I get a formal invitation from them then I can surely partake in various activities ISRA conducts.”
