MUMBAI: It seems that the wait for the Vh1 standard application is finally drawing to a close. The English music channel’s entry into the app stores is scheduled for the end of January 2014, when the Vh1 app will be released to the public.
Sources at Viacom confirm that the application is in the development stage and that it should be ready for launch by the end of January 2014.
“It will be out on iOS, Android and Windows phones. We will be giving the audiences exclusive video content which is not available anywhere else, editorial features around things that they love i.e., music and lifestyle, and something that will make their musical life a bit easier,” said Rajneel Kumar, VP and Business Head- Digital Viacom Media, in a previous interview about the application that has been developed in house by a dedicated team.

Speaking of musical life, here is an update on the channel’s web based contest Game of Tunes that ran for 14 days. The objective was to gather original electronic music composers from India and showcase their best compositions through their music based game. Through the contest Vh1 gathered 50+ entries. The entries included music broadly considered in the EDM genre and also included some pleasant surprises.
“We heard a lot of fusion that couples drum ‘n’ bass genre with traditional Indian instruments and even hip-hop inspired music. From the collective set of entries we zeroed down on 10 musicians whom we felt stood out in terms of originality, popularity and variety,” confirmed sources at Vh1, “These 10 indie artists will get a chance to be featured in a one of a kind rhythm based game. The game will be released globally in the first half of 2014 complete with credits to all musicians.” The contest was judged by a team of in-house music fanatics and veteran video game designers from Viacom 18. The good news for these artistes is that they will get to keep all IP rights to their compositions while the rest of the world plays to their tunes.
