MUMBAI: In a first of its kind move, Universal Music has signed a licensing deal with 2012 London Olympics to write, record and publish music for the games.
Universal Music will exclusively release London 2012-branded music, including compilation albums, composing, publishing and recording of Olympic-related music between now and the games.
With the big role that music will play at the Games, both in the build-up to and during events, and crucially at ceremonies, Universal Music will also act as music consultants to London 2012 which is seeking to raise ?2 billion from the private sector to stage the Games, retains creative control over use of music at the Games. Universal Music Group’s wide-ranging collection of labels and artists will provide the musical talent.
Gennaro Castaldo, of HMV, said, “It is certainly the first time I have ever heard of anything like this before with the Olympics. It obviously has a practical and musical benefit but coming out of that, a piece of music or an artist could get a massive musical bounce given that the Olympics is going to be huge and have an audience of millions, not just here but abroad.
“This agreement could be a powerful catalyst to encourage people to rediscover old songs or perhaps listen to new music as well.”
London officials say it’s the first time an Olympic organizing committee has signed such a deal with a music company.
The London organizing committee says “The diverse nature of Universal Music Group’s labels and artists will provide a rich talent pool for the games in 2012.”
