MUMBAI: U2 frontman Bono has revealed that he may never again be able to play the guitar after his cycling accident in New York’s Central Perk. The incident left the Irish-born singer with a fractured eye socket and in need of extensive surgery to the left arm, resulting in a titanium elbow.
The 54 year old stated on the band’s website, “Recovery has been more difficult than I thought. As I write this, it is not clear that I will ever play guitar again. The band have reminded me that neither they nor western civilization are depending on this. I personally would very much miss fingering the frets of my green Irish falcon or my red Gretsch. Just for the pleasure, aside from writing tunes.”
Bono also added that the injury would mean taking some time out of the public eye. The consequences of this freak accident are significant enough that I will have to concentrate hard to be ready for the U2 tour in fitness terms. As a result, I have cancelled every public appearance,” Bono wrote.

The Grammy winner, however, did find a little humour in his ordeal writing, “I broke my hand, my shoulder, my elbow and my face. But the real injury this year was to my Irish pride as it was discovered that under my tracksuit I was wearing yellow and black Lycra cycling shorts. This is not very rock’n’roll.”
He also stated that he had no memory of the accident as he “blanked out on impact”. The accident, which happened in November 2014 resulted in him missing out on a U2 show in December. However, Bruce Springsteen and Coldplay’s Chris Martin filled in for Bono as singers for that show.
U2 are scheduled to begin a world tour- ‘Innocence + Experience’ from mid-May. The 60-date tour will start in North America and will then move to Europe by September 2015.
