MUMBAI: According to the recent report by PRS, it is the theme songs of shows like ‘The Weakest Link’ and ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?’ that have been among the UK’s highest grossers abroad in the past decade.
As per music rights organisation PRS, overseas revenue from TV themes has grown considerably over the last ten years, with income rising from ?15 million in 2000 to ?50 million in 2009.
Shows such as ‘Teletubbies’ and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? have become particularly lucrative for songwriters as the format has been sold to numerous countries where they are often reconstructed but usually retain the original theme music.
Many of these songs are sold to over 100 countries. The writers of theme tunes and incidental music for TV shows get paid every time that music is used anywhere around the world.
Britain is one of only three net exporters of global music along with the United States and Sweden.
