MUMBAI: Late West Coast rapper legend Tupac Shakur is set to rise again through his works on Broadway.
The non-biographical ‘Holler If Ya Hear Me’ musical will be based on the rapper’s music, many of them unreleased material. 2Pac who was killed in a drive-by shooting in 1996, aged 25 was one of rap music’s biggest stars. He sold over 75 million copies and tracks like his US no 1 hit ‘California Love’ remain anthems.
The show, currently under production, set in the present in an unnamed Midwestern industrial city -follows the struggles of two childhood friends and their families. It is directed by Kenny Leon and also has Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shaku, as one of the show’s producers. It will hit stage in 2013-14 season, reports said.
“I believe it is our responsibility to make sure that Tupac’s entire body of work is made available for his fans. My son left many incomplete pieces and even more unfinished ideas. Using the blueprints he gave us, I am committed to fulfilling this duty,” 2Pac’s mother Afeni Shaku, recently vowed to make public so a new generation of fans can hear his music, said.
The rapper’s mother – who runs the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation, which helps underprivileged children receive an education – was the head of her son’s estate following his death.
“Tupac was a prophet and I want everyone to see that. [Holler If Ya Hear Me] is a present day musical using all of Tupac’s music, but Tupac is not a character in the musical,” director Kenny Leon said.
