MUMBAI: ‘Titanic’, the Tony Award winning musical is setting sail to the stages of Canada. Producers of the musical- Fran and Barry Weissler and David Mirvish announced that the production will be playing from 22 July to 31 August at the Royal Alexandra Theatre, after which it will head back to Broadway.
Directing the musical, which is based on the voyage of the ship, will be Thom Southerland. He won best director for ‘Me and Juliet’ at the Off West End Awards in 2011 and has a number of other theatre credits to his name, including ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’, ‘Annie Get Your Gun’, ‘The Full Monty’ and ‘Victor/ Victoria’.
The lyrics and music are credited to Maury Yeston, who also worked on ‘Nine’ and ‘Grand Hotel’. Peter Stone, who is the only writer to win an Emmy, Oscar and Tony, has penned an accompanying book with the musical. Additional details of the production like casting and creative team are yet to be revealed.
The musical depicts some stories of real individuals aboard the RMS Titanic, which was travelling from Southampton to New York in April 1912, before it hit an iceberg and sank, killing about 1500 people.
The original production of the musical first opened at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on 23 April 1997, and lasted for more than 800 performances. During this time, the musical claimed five Tony awards that same year for Book of a Musical, Score and Best Musical.
