Popular duo The Tetseo Sisters performed at McDowell’s No1 Yaari Jam Pad which was held recently. Melodious duo sisters are the true cultural ambassadors of the North East with their “Li”, breaking barriers and boundaries. Li is louder than words and the Tetseo Sisters are already going places, taking it across frontiers. Mutsevelu of Tetseo Sisters gets Woman Super Achiever Award 2020. Can you tell us your collaboration with McDowell’s No1 Yaari Jam Pad?

McDowell’s No1 Yaari Jam Pad was such a fun experience for us. Working on a song that had a sort of guideline made us really work harder. Our song is a mix of English, Chokri Naga and a few lines of Hindi. It took us a while to freeze on the final format but once the flow started, it just happened over one evening. Our initial plan was to sit in the studio and record it live but since all the group members/sisters couldn’t be together to work on the song until actually when we shot the episode and the shoot did not accommodate our session musicians, we had to prerecord the background music.
The energy was really high recording live vocals in the studio in Kolkata and doing the shoot as well on the same day was hectic but we got to work with a wonderful team. Platforms like No1 Yaari Jam Pad by McDowell’s No1 Soda and Hungama Artist Aloud, have given an opportunity for musicians to come together and create new music. Our McDowell’s No1 Yaari Jam Pad song “Road to Somewhere” is going to be quite different and fun.
How was your experience working for this project?
The first brief was to write a song about friendship and this was right up our alley. We decided to add our own Nagaland flavour to the song when the song called for a few Hindi words as well. For this song, the melody and words both came together and then we added the Naga bits. As usual, we were all in different places and checked in on phone to finalize the song, harmonies, split lines and all.
The shoot, the recording, the travel – all made for another excellent opportunity to celebrate the friendship between us siblings and the music that binds us, giving us a reason to travel. We are super glad that our often missing on tour member Azi could also make it. We were also glad and nervous to add the Hindi bit to the song. We hope people love it as much as we do.
Can you tell us a bit about your music?
Our music is rooted in Chakhesang Naga tribal sound and we sing our folk songs and folk fusion numbers in Chokri and of course in English too. We have had some fun with Hindi mashups too. We have been experimental and like exploring new sounds, dialects, and textures but built around our signature sound of vocal harmonies and an electro-folk touch with an acoustic feel.
Also, can you give us detail on your upcoming projects?
With the Corona Pandemic, most of our live events have been canceled or postponed. We are however using the time to work on new sounds and songs, pending projects and sitting on video ideas/new songs ideas. We are social distancing, staying at home and practicing frequent sanitization and proper handwashing.
