MUMBAI: Former singer of The Police, Sting is journeying to Broadway with his new musical ‘The Last Ship’ in the fall of next year. Inspired by Sting’s early life- the musical centres on working class family life and labour strife in a north English shipbuilding community-a region the “Fields of Gold” singer grew up in.
The Last Ship will make its premier at the Bank of America theatre in Chicago 10 June 2014 and run till 13 July. However, Broadway dates for the musical have not yet been released. The musical will include an all star creative team and will feature Sting’s original score. “Next to Normal’ writer Brian Yorkey and “Red” playwright John Logan are said to be working on the story, while Joe Mantello who headed “Wicked” will direct the musical. Tony nominee, Steven Hoggett will take over the choreography for the musical.
The musical is based on “Gideon Fletcher” who leaves his home in a sea faring town to see the rest of the world. When he comes back after 14 years, he finds the shipyard’s future in danger. It depicts how he, along with other shipyard workers attempt to save their dream. When asked about the musical, Sting said, “The memories at the heart of The Last Ship have occupied my mind for most of my life. I was compelled to tell this story, and I’ve had the great fortune of collaborating with an enormously talented team,” he added.

The 16-time Grammy Award winner will unveil an original album “The Last Ship” that features music from the show on 24 September. He will also perform a series of concerts from 25 September to 9 October at the Public Theatre.
