MUMBAI: One of Mumbai’s most popular young independent bands – Spud In The Box is finally working on its debut full length album. Currently, slogging their “behinds off” at Yash Raj Studio, the alt/pop-rock band is recording more than ten songs to put out new material for all their fans.
Known to impress the crowd with their boyish charms, multi-dimensional instrumentation and harmonies (thanks to the two vocalists), Spud In The Box is a six member band. From performing and winning college festivals to travelling across the country for a number of shows, the band that was formed just a few years back has made a place and a name for itself in the music scene.
Their previous EP ‘Attention Please’ contained only four songs even though they have been performing more songs live. Rohan Rajadhyaksha, keyboardist and one of the vocalists, says, “Our upcoming album has been in the making for almost three years now. We have about 17 songs out of which we will probably include ten to twelve tracks in the record.”

The other members include Ankit Dayal (vocals, guitars), Hartej Sawhney (guitars), Siddharth Talwar (guitars), Zubin Bhathena (bass) and Joshua Singh(drums).
He added, “Although there is no particular theme to the album, the central idea will be that of ‘growth’. We have been through so much together in the past few years, including a line-up change. The songs kind of reflect growth even if we do not directly speak about it.”
‘Make A Wish’, ‘Bullet Point’ and ‘More Than Once’ are some of the songs that the band is working on. They admit that their sound has changed since the inception of the band and their EP. While earlier Rohan and Ankit would each sing solos, now, they do harmonies and split the vocals in a way as to support each other. The end result is always perfect synchronicity, when all the instruments work together to make the band sound much larger and there is an obvious chemistry between the six members.
Rohan explains, “We have learnt to understand each other’s strengths and limitations. We work on our music in a way that we do justice to it. We look at what each song requires.”
The band’s influences lie in different genres – rap, rock, pop and others – considering they are six very different people. But, their major and common inspirations, as far as their sound is concerned, are Karnivool, Radiohead, Jack White, Daft Punk and a few others.
The sextet has been updating the Facebook page with pictures and videos while recording in the studio. They will go on to reveal snippets of what they are working on and the recording process will be completed by the second week of October. The album will be set to release early next year because, in Rohan’s words, “There is a lot that is going on with each song; the mixing is going to take time. Plus, there is the packaging and artwork that we have to look after.”
The group will be performing at the NH7 Weekender in Bangalore this year, including a few other festivals that have not been announced yet. They are also looking at going on tour within the country next year for their album.
