MUMBAI: Sony Music Entertainment India and Warner Music Group today announced a strategic licence deal for Sony Music to represent Warner Music’s legendary recording artists’ releases and labels in India, Sri Lanka and the other SAARC countries
Speaking with Radioandmusic.com, India and Middle East Sony Music president, Shridhar Subramaniam said, “Our major focus will be to make the music of international artistes available to the Indian masses. This will require a month to make the product available through various digital partners. This will be followed by Sony music’s aggressive strategies to push sales.” There will be two teams for Sony music’s International catalogue – one team that will look after Warner Music and other will look at their own catalogue.
Subramaniam stressed, “This will help us to become a leading international company in India, which is a fast growing market and we hope to create an impact with the deal.” Warner music had floated the tender in June to all the leading music companies in India.

In August 2013, Warner/Chappell Music and Times Music announced an exclusive licensing deal under which Times Music will manage the rights to Warner/Chappell’s repertoire and driving publishing and synch deals on behalf of a wide array of legendary songwriters, award-winning contemporary hits and influential standards. But this deal in no way will affect the working of both companies.
He also hinted that Sony music for three-four months will focus on making the catalogue available to the audiences. International Warner Recorded Music President Stu Bergen said, “The rapid growth of the market in India creates great potential for our international roster and catalogue, so it was important for us to find a partner with the market knowledge and relationships with local retailers and media partners to help unlock that. We look forward to working together to achieve strong results for our artists.”
The Warner Music catalogue includes some of the music world’s legends, and contemporary greats like Eric Clapton, The Eagles, Green Day, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Madonna, Coldplay, Led Zeppelin, Linkin Park, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nickelback, Kylie Minogue, Michael Bublé and Bruno Mars to name a few, from Warner Music’s stable of labels including Asylum, Atlantic, Big Beat, Elektra, Erato, Fueled By Ramen, Nonesuch, Parlophone, Reprise, Rhino, Roadrunner, Rykodisc, Sire, Warner Bros., Warner Classics, Warner Music Nashville and Word.
