MUMBAI: Sonu Niigaam launched veteran ghazal singer Talat Aziz’z new album Caravan –E – Ghazal under the Saregama label in Mumbai on Tuesday
Caravan-E-Ghazal is an anthology of Ghazals that weaves together a selection from nine master poets of Urdu. Prior to the album launch, Talat Aziz performed all the ghazals from the album. However, Niigaam’s ghazal singing was the most awaited, considering the fact that he rarely sings ghazals. The who’s who of the music world like Hariharan, Sunita Rao, Penaaz Masani, and Alka Yagnik attended this rare gathering
Saregama India Ltd, Vice President, Atul Churamani said, “It’s an honour for us to be associated with this project. There is a dire need for music today to have good poetry and ‘Caravan -E –Ghazal’ is the quintessence. It is work of nine of the greatest poets to some memorable music by Talat – the track by Sonu Niigam ‘Qurbaton Mein’ is icing on the cake.”
Sonu Niigaam said, “I was privileged to work with Talatji. I always wanted to sing ghazals.”
Speaking on the occasion Aziz said, “This album is a culmination of lots of love and hard work. I have tried to keep the compositions traditional keeping the great poets of Urdu and their poetry in mind, yet embellished music with contemporary treatment. I was helped in this by Jitu-Shankar who arranged the music.”
At the time of the album launch, Aziz offered Niigaam to unveil the album. A surprised Niigaam said, “I don’t think I deserve to unveil this album – I am too small.” However, Aziz was unrelenting, Niigaam gave in – but only after bowing down to him.
