MUMBAI: Instead of putting at rest the prolonged controversy which took place between Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi’s son Shahid, former vocalist Shabbir Kumar has now challenged the melody queen to show the letter containing the purported apology as a proof.
In a recent function, vocalist Kumar said, “Lata ji’s claims that Rafi sahab had written her a letter of apology has hurt the sentiments of his fans and also raised doubts on her prestige. Mangeshkar raised the issue 32 years after Rafi’s death only to get publicity. The late singer’s son had said no such letter was ever written.”
As per media reports, on the occasion of her 83rd birth anniversary, the Nightingale of India had alleged that she had refused to sing with Mohammed Rafi, not the other way round, and was mollified only after he wrote her a letter of apology.

Shahid Rafi later on challenged the claim by demanding Mangeshkar to produce the letter and had said that he would contemplate legal action if she does not apologize. Shahid also stated that no such letter was ever written.
