MUMBAI: Trying to create a political furor in the world of music, Shiv Sena and Hindu Sena activists disrupted Pakistani Sufi singer Sanam Marwi’s performance at the Sindhi Sufi Music Festival on 16 March in New Delhi.
Apparently, police sources stated that the activists staged a protest against the participation of the artiste from the neighbouring country at the Sufi festival being held in the city. Around 29 people were detained at the protest being held in front of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts where the Sindhi Academy had organized the fest.
The protestors claimed to be members of Shiv Sena and Hindu Sena and were removed by the police at around 7pm. However the protests continued later when the singer took to the stage after a performance by Indian singer Ghanshyam Waswani and a Kathak dancer.
As per reports, the protest commenced at 8:15pm during Marwi’s performance in the form of activists allegedly shouting slogans against Pakistan. They also went to the dais and stopped the singer from performing.
The situation was controlled by the police, who intervened and detained the protestors.
In a press statement, the Sena secretary said that Pakistan was stabbing the country in the back, but the Indian government was reaching out to them with proposals of love and peace. He said no Pakistani singer or player would be allowed on Indian soil until Pakistan stopped abetting terrorism.
It is stated that the protests were held due to the recent terror attack at a CRPF camp in Srinagar. The two-day festival hosted Sufi singers from India and Pakistan displaying their shared heritage of Sindhi Sufism.
