MUMBAI: British drum and bass artist Shaun Brockhurst, best known under his stage name ‘Doctor P’, formed Circus Records in 2009 along with three other electronic house and dubstep artists – Earl Falconer, bassist of the multiple Grammy Award nominated reggae pop band UB40, Joshua Steele, BBC Sound of 2012 nominee, known as ‘Flux Pavilion’, and Simon Swan.
Speaking to Radioandmusic.com Brockhurst said, “Simon, Earl, Josh and I decided to start our own label as we felt that there was a gap in the dubstep scene that we could fill.” He further added, “We thought it would be cool to be in complete control of our own music, instead of letting some other label do everything for us. It turns out running a label is much more work than I expected!”
Doctor P is scheduled to perform at this year’s Karbonn MTV Bloc Party in India this weekend on 11 and 12 April in Juhu. Brockhurst said that he found about the India gig through his manager, who asked him if he wanted to go and he jumped at the opportunity. “It is somewhere I have always wanted to go, so I have been looking forward to it since I found out I was going,” he added.

While drum and bass has quite a following across the world, acts like OX7GEN, SICKFLIP and Su Real are trying to create a stronghold of bass audience in India. On that, Brockhurst opined, “I am not sure if I have actually heard any Indian bass music. I may have heard some without realising the artist was Indian.”
When asked if listeners could expect a Doctor P album anytime soon, Brockhurst said, “I do not plan an album any time soon. I quite like doing singles and EPs, as it allows me to get music out more regularly.” As for his thoughts on collaboration he said, “If an Indian artist was making something really cool I would definitely be down for collaborating.”
