MUMBAI: Four-time National Award winner Shankar Mahadevan discourages upcoming artistes, who imitate other singers. Mahadevan revealed this during the occasion of naming the 12 finalists of the singing competition, ‘Golden Voice’.
Mahadevan spoke to Radioandmusic.com on the various sounds he heard from the finalists. “Of the 12 singers I heard, there were a few who were trying to imitate other singers, past and present alike. I discourage that practice. I want these singers to try and find their own signature voice that will distinguish them from other singers.”
Mahadevan also stated that he would not ask Shaan to sing a song for which Kaikash Kher is better suited, and vice versa. Or have Benny Dayal sing a song better suited for a Sufi singer. Ergo, according to him, from a music director’s point of view, it is imperative that the singers find their own individual style of singing.

Based on how the 12 finalists perform during the various rounds, he will then choose a winner. The winner will get the opportunity to work with the popular singer on his next Bollywood film.
The theme this year is ‘Mitti Ki Khushboo’, literally translated to ‘The Scent of the Soil’.
