MUMBAI: Indian Electro-rock duo Shaair + Func have bagged four nominations for Best Pop/R&B Song, Best Dance Electronica song, Best Dance Act (Group) and Most Genre Bending Track at the Asia Voice Independent Music (Avima) Awards.
Monica Dogra of Shaair + Func says that the nominations have inspired her to work harder and get her music to a platform which will enable her to reach out to more people on a global front.
Other bands from India that made it to the list include Another Vertigo Rush, Motherjane and Workshop. Voting for the nominees will start on 1 March and the awards will be announced via a webcast from Malaysia on 29 March.
Malaysia has bagged an impressive 36 nominations with leading acts like Estrella,Melissa Indot,Yuna,Altimet and Pop Shuvit scoring high on the nomination list.
Indie acts from Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and Philippines such as Thaitanium, Everybody Loves Irene, Up Dharma Down, Elemental Gaze, Electrico, The Out of Body Special, The Great Spy Experiment and Taken by Cars also bagged nominations.
Other major awards contenders are Rhymebot from China, Jojouka from Japan, Violent Jokes from Hong Kong, Juliana Down from UAE and Duonoreply from Korea.
With over 16 countries participating, the Avima awards have become the biggest indie awards of the world. Media reports quote that nominations were received from India, Malaysia, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, China, Thailand, Singapore, the UAE, Brunei, Hong Kong, Philippines, Vietnam and Korea.
According to media reports, the task of contacting more than 3000 independent artistes shortlisting around a 1000 songs over a week was a gruelling but amazing one. The selecting committee was motivated by the amazing talent they were exposed to during the judging process.
Though there were offers to host the event at Beijing or Manila, the organizers lacked the resources to take it outside Malaysia. In order to make it a unique global event the Avima awards can be viewed by anyone around the world online. The organizers of the event feel that the awards symbolizes the spirit of indie and that big money and major sponsors are not required to host a major awards show.
