MUMBAI: 85 year old Indian classical musician Pt. Jasraj is someone who lives by the phrase ‘When in Rome, live like Romans.’ While most people his age would maintain safe distance from the digital world, the maestro believes in making optimum use of it, and echoing his thoughts is flutist Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia.
Jasraj, a technology savvy person, believes that the recently launched Saregama Classical App could help Shastriya Sangeet reach more people and will also add to its value. “If we look at technology, there is nothing better than this app. Using technology to promote classical music is a good effort,” said the veteran classical singer.
Talking about HMV and Saregama’s effort Pt. Jasraj stated, “I am glad that they made this effort to take classical music to the world. For no music is stronger than classical music. It can help you stay healthy, it can give you sleep, decrease diabetes, cure headaches and may other ailments. It is just that one’s body has to be receptive,” he added.

Talking about the same Chaurasia stated, “The app will be helpful to classical music lovers in India, as well as abroad. The younger generation will learn a lot.” He further added, “Classical music was never promoted the way Indian film music was promoted. We do not know why.”
Although many feel classical music is of least interest to the younger generation, the legendary singer Pt. Jasraj looks at it the other way round. “They are still inclined towards Shashtri Sangeet. They work towards it too, but when they get an option like this app, then it just increases their interest in the genre,” he said.
Pt. Jasraj also revealed that he has several students in Canada and America, which shows that classical music, is appreciated and accepted around the globe, and not just in India.
