MUMBAI: Composer Sandeep Chowta in past few years have brought down some phenomenal musicians to India as a part of the Sandeep Chowta projects – from Frank Gambale to Virgil Donati. The latest in the line are the Jeff & The Jackets who are scheduled to perform on 14 December 2009 in Mumbai
However bringing these acts for one-off concerts is not something Chowta aims for, “The whole intention is to have these musicians to regularly come to India. And, I am looking forward to introduce some Indian classical musicians to these musicians – I think there is lot more to indian classical music than what is being currently explored – I am trying present the classical musicians in a differnt light,” says Chowta who has collaborated with Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt on his upcoming album besides some of the world best jazz musicians
Musicians from Jeff & The Jackets, who have also played on Chowta’s upcoming album are also keen on exploring some Indian sounds. Says pianist Russell Ferrante, “We had worked on Sandeep’s album, and we had over dubbed on some tracks by Indian classical musicians. Though we didn’t get to play live then, I am hoping to watch some live classical concerts during my stay.”
Jeff & The Jackets are a group of veteran session musicians that comprise of guitarist Jeff Richman, pianist Rusell Ferrante, bassist Jimmy Haslip and drummer William Kennedy. As far as the bands repertoire goes, Jeff & The Jackets would be performing music from Jeff Richman’s new album and mix of traditional jazz ballads and contemporary jazz. This would be the band’s first performance in Mumbai.
The band will perform at Bandra’s St. Andrews Auditorium on 14 December, 2009. For tickets call 993077523.
