MUMBAI: Samira Koppikar, the voice being hits like ‘Saawana Aya Hai’ from the film ‘Creature 3D’ and ‘Aaj Phir Tumpe’ from the movie ‘Hate Story 2’, has been taught classical music since an early age, which she says is vital for her. According to her, it is easy being a singer today because of technology, but at the same time, it is important to not rely on it.
“Whenever I hear the songs of the ‘good old days’, which were crooned by Ashaji and Lataji, we find a lot of soul put into that music. The recordings that happened at that time were all live, so if a singer goes wrong or a musician goes wrong, the entire song had to be re-recorded. That is how perfect musicians had to be. Today, technology has made us complacent and a singer’s job has become very easy today. But it is important to not rely on technology as it is the quality of music that gets deteriorated,” said Koppikar.
She tries her level best to strike a balance between her Bollywood and indie projects. Her last indie project was the single ‘Bebasi’, which she released last year with other independent singers- Indrajit Sharma, Prakash Sontakke, Kalyan Baruah, Gino Banks and Sheldon D’silva. “When you sing for someone, you are being their voice. But as an artist, you need to have a canvas so that you can paint it with your own colours. For this an artist needs to explore their abilities,” she opined.

Koppikar has recorded for a number of Bollywood composers including Himesh Reshammiya, Sohail Sen, Siddharth and Sangeet Haldipur, and Arko. However, she recently composed her very first Bollywood song- ‘Maati Ka Palang’ for the film ‘NH10’. The singer/ songwriter added that composing is a difficult job, since one needs to be true to the script and has to keep in mind the situation. Koppikar also revealed that she will be releasing a couple of singles this year, for which she will be collaborating with various artistes.
